Menopause and ADHD

Menopause is a natural phase in a person’s life, marking the end of the reproductive years and bringing significant hormonal changes. For those who have ADHD, this transition can bring unique challenges and in recent years there’s been growing interest in how menopause affects ADHD.

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. During this time, a decline in oestrogen and progesterone can trigger a range of symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings and sleep disturbances.

The impact of menopause on ADHD

The hormonal fluctuations associated with menopause can affect the brain’s neurotransmitter activity. Oestrogen in particular plays a crucial role in brain functions as it helps regulate dopamine levels. As it declines, people with ADHD may experience worse symptoms.

Menopausal symptoms like mood swings, anxiety and irritability can interact with ADHD as both conditions cause emotional deregulation. This, combined with a lack of sleep quality can make it hard for anyone going through menopause and managing their ADHD effectively.

Managing ADHD during menopause

If you are approaching or experiencing menopause and have ADHD, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to receive clear guidance and treatment if necessary. Implementing healthy lifestyle choices such as engaging in physical activities, having hobbies that bring you joy and practicing mindfulness can help alleviate some of the challenges associated with both conditions.

The interplay between menopause and ADHD is a complex and relatively unexplored topic. While there isn’t a cure-all solution, understanding this intersection and seeking appropriate medical guidance can help anyone going through this transition.
